Another sketch trying out a new inking style. I didn’t wait long enough for the ink to dry, which is why the one girl’s face is all smudgy.

Working with Thien Pham

I wrote about working with Thien Pham, my collaborator on Level Up, for DiversityInYA.com:
It took us years to make Level Up. And I must confess, I spent a significant amount of that time rubbing my temples and explaining to Thien the importance of rulers and deadlines and knowing the average number of words that will fit in a square inch of white space. Thien would nod, chuckle to himself, and then keep making comics his own way. Eventually, he took to calling me “Tiger Partner.”

I’m playing around with a new drawing/inking style in preparation for a graphic novel I’m about to draw. I want to capture the spirit of later Charles Schulz, when he inked with that unstable line. There’s something beautiful and intimate about that line– I think it’d be perfect for my story. I hung out with some of the Schulz Associates about a month ago and they told me that the shaky line was completely unintentional. He had a stroke and wasn’t able to hold his pen steady after. I was shocked. I thought he was doing it on purpose, as a way of getting to that intimacy. Shows what a consummate cartoonist he was.
