In January 2016, the Library of Congress, Children’s Book Council, and Every Child A Reader invited me to Washington DC and appointed me the fifth National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature! It was one of the most amazing days of my life.

As ambassador, I’ll be speaking at a variety of events, including the National Book Festival.  I’m also blogging about my creative process at Panels.net and what I’m reading at Reading Rainbow.  And I’m talking to folks about their favorite children’s books on my Reading Without Walls video podcast at Reading Rockets!  You can find episodes at the bottom of this page.

The Reading Without Walls Challenge!

Every ambassador picks a platform, something they want to focus on.  Mine is Reading Without Walls. I’m challenging kids to read without walls in one of three ways:

1. Read a book about a character who doesn’t look like you or live like you.

2. Read a book about a topic you don’t know much about.

3. Read a book in a format that you don’t normally read for fun. This might be a chapter book, a graphic novel, a book in verse, a picture book, or a hybrid book.

If you really want to go for the gold star, read a book that fits all three criteria!
